I heard the moment Cynthia started getting up and getting dressed. Although nothing happened with Nadia last night I was feeling guilty as hell. I tried to tell myself that it was nothing wrong with me just hanging out with a friend. But if it was Cynthia hanging out with some dude, I would be pissed. It was best for me to keep my distance from Cynthia for a while. If she asked me just the right question about last night I was going to have to lie my ass off and she could be a human lie detector.

When my phone rang, I knew it wasn’t Cynthia or Cypress because they both had their own personalized ringtones downloaded on my phone. I reached over to the nightstand, picked up my phone and looked at the screen. It was Nadia. My body instantly tensed up. What if Cynthia had been home?

I slid my finger across the screen. “What’s up?”

“Is that how you answer the phone?”

The sound of her voice caused my muscles to relax. It was the weirdest shit to me. She was having basically the same effects on my body as Cynthia could generate. I ran my hand across my head. I was wildin’ out. I was glad she called.

“What you got going girl?” I asked.

“I figured since Nicole and Cynthia were out doing their best friend stuff you might be sitting at home with nothing to do.”

Ahh, that shit was going to take some getting used to. It kept slipping my mind that Nadia was Cynthia’s best friend’s sister. Even more of a reason for me to keep my distance from Nadia. Yet I felt like I was being drawn to her against my will. Well, not really against my will but against my better judgement.

“Girl, a boss like me always got something to do,” I boasted.

“Is that right?”

“Yep,” I confirmed. “What you getting into today?”

“Not a thing. I’m bored as hell.”

“Why didn’t you go to the spa with Nicole and Cynthia?” Honestly, I had no desire for her to be hanging out with Cynthia, but it seemed like the next logical question after she said she was bored.

“I wasn’t invited. Guess it was a best friend thing.”

When Nadia said that I easily picked up on the sadness in her voice. I kind of felt bad for her. I could imagine how she felt. She was finally back in the states and her lifelong best friend had another best friend. She had to be feeling excluded.

“I’m gone swing by,” I said.

“Ok.” She seemed to perk up.

“Give me about an hour.”

“Alright then,” I heard her say before I hung up.

Once I hung up I had regrets. What the hell was I doing? This chick was going to be my damned kryptonite. Knowing Cynthia wouldn’t approve wasn’t enough to keep me from going over to Nadia’s.

I rationalized the situation. “It’s not like I’m going over there to screw. I’m just going to hang out for a while.”

I sent a quick text to Cynthia telling her I was stepping out for a while.
